Just one week from what pro-democracy protesters had dubbed “Farewell Friday”, and after nearly 30 years of dictatorial rule of Egypt, a peaceful grassroots movement for change has prevailed as Hosni Mubarek has officially transferred control of the country over to the military. Though the details of what comes next for Egypt are still unclear, United States government officials are calling this the first step in a peaceful transition to democracy. Fireworks filled the night sky over Tahrir Square in Cairo and there have been many reports of Egyptian citizens fainting in the streets as the 18 days of protest turns to celebration.
