Space Needle Celebrates 50 Years

The Space Needle, built for the 1962 World’s Fair, is still one of Seattle’s biggest tourist attractions. In a ceremony yesterday, the original investor in the Space Needle, Bagley Wright was present. Those in attendance shared stories about the building of the Needle. The 605 foot building was completed in December 1961, and opened for the World’s Fair on April 21, 1962. The theme was “Century 21”.

The 50th birthday celebration this week is just the beginning of a number of special events at the Space Needle – leading towards the 50th anniversary of the 1962 World’s Fair in April, 2012. You can learn more fun facts about the Space Needle at
