Expect a lot of traffic congestion this weekend as workers close State Route 520 between Montlake Boulevard in Seattle and Interstate 405 in Bellevue, and 10,000 cyclists ride in the annual Seattle to Portland bike ride. The Mercer Street ramps will also be closed.
Washington State DOT says nearly 166,000 vehicles pass over the 520 bridge on a regular weekend. Those vehicles now have to find an alternate route.
Department of Transportation crews plan to install a culvert beneath all lanes of the SR 520 and conduct annual maintenance of the floating bridge. Also, the city of Seattle will close the Interstate 5 ramps to and from Mercer Street.
WSDOT expects the longest delays midday Saturday and Sunday on I-5 and I-90 heading into Seattle, and on I-405 approaching I-90. The express lanes schedules will change this weekend on I-5 and I-90 to improve the flow of traffic.
