A hop, skip and a ferry ride away from Seattle is the quaint city of Friday Harbor. The island is hosting this year’s San Juan County fair, which has the feeling of an arts festival. Come and see.
The fair is open Wednesday, August 17 through Sunday, August 20 between 10:00am and 9:00pm. On Wednesday evening, at 8:00pm is The Fairly Outrageous Trashion-Fashion Show. Watch as artists and designers and the fashion-conscious model their recyclable, sustainable art and accessories.
On Thursday, August 18, you can show your skateboarding and/or BMX tricks at the fair! Registration will take place from 12:30-1:30pm outside the main fair gate. Register the day of ; the show gets started at 2:00pm!
Saturday, August 20 is the Friday Harbor 8.8K (about 5.5mi) Loop Run. In its 34th year, the race begins at 9:15am on Spring Street, goes through town on Warbass to Turn Point, to Pear Point to Argyle and ends at the County Fair. It’s a fun run and/or walk for people of all ages. Registration fee includes entrance to the Fair and a free t-shirt! An awards ceremony follows race with medals awarded for first three places in 5-year age categories. You can register online at www.islandrec.org or drop by Island Rec at 580 Guard Street, M-F, 1-5pm to register in person.
There will be fine art and photography exhibits, handcraft demonstrations, fiber arts, and the horticulture society. There are also recreational activities, agricultural shows, 4-H animals and demonstrations. It’s a low key “slice of island life” that you and the family won’t want to miss.
