A Smashing Idea! Your old Glass is a valuable Resource -but we’re a bit slow to get all of it recylced – over 15,000 tons were disposed of at the landfills back in 2008.

Green, brown and clear glass food and beverage containers are all recyclable. Glass that is crushed and ready to be remelted is called cullet. Once crushed into “cullet” and sold, it may be remanufactured into new glass containers, or a myriad of other things, like for use in asphalt paving.

Every ton of waste glass recycled into new items saves 315 kilograms of carbon dioxidefrom being released into the atmosphere during the creation of new glass. Glass cullet melts at a lower temperature, so less energy is needed melt the same quantity of new material. Not only is it easy to recycle, glass it can be recycled indefinitely with no loss in quality or purity.
