BELLEVUE, Wash. (CBS Seattle) — Two men answering a CraigsList apartment ad over the weekend found a 4-year-old boy with his dead father.
Bellevue Police Officer Carla Iafrate told CBS Seattle that the child was left to fend for himself for 24 to 48 hours.
The boy and his deceased father were not discovered until two local men arrived on Nov. 26 in response to a CraigsList ad for a room rental. According to KCPQ-TV, the boy was visibly upset and in tears as he answered the door.
The boy told the two men, Daniel Anca and his friend, that he was unable to wake up his father. After breaking into the house to investigate when the child accidentally locked them out, Anca called authorities to the scene.
The King County Medical Examiner’s Office said that the manner and cause of death of 36-year-old Matthew Speckler is still pending.
“Officers (on the scene) said there didn’t appear to have been any foul play,” Iafrate added. “You never know until it’s ruled out as a determined cause of death.”
The child was temporarily given over to his grandparents before his mother, who does not live with Speckler, returned from travel to care for the boy herself.
