Occupy Seattle Plans To Shut Down West Coast Ports
SEATTLE (CBS Seattle/AP) — Occupy Seattle demonstrators planned a march and two rallies Monday as part of the campaign to shut down West Coast ports.
Organizers said on their website they would rally at 1 p.m. at Westlake Plaza in downtown Seattle then march to Port of Seattle property for rallies at 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. near the Spokane Street bridge and under the West Seattle bridge.
Many who planned to participate said through video testimonials that they were in solidarity with longshoremen who they say are victims of unfair labor practices. Others gave reasons including alleged police brutality and the importing of goods made overseas with cheap labor.
The website says demonstrators do not plan to break into port property or to sabotage equipment. Occupy marches and rallies also are planned Monday in Tacoma and Olympia.
Meanwhile, time is running out for a few tents remaining at the Occupy Seattle camp at Seattle Central Community College. Most people moved out in response to an eviction order from the college.
