 Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta marked the end of the U.S. war in Iraq at a highly symbolic ceremony inBaghdad this morning. Panetta said veterans of the nearly nine-year conflict can be “secure in knowing that your sacrifice has helped the Iraqi people to cast tyranny aside.”

 President Barack Obama marked the ending of the Iraq war on Wednesday atFt. Bragg,NC with a tribute to the troops who fought and died in a conflict he opposed from the start.

 Mitt Romney is sharpening his warning to Republicans about the consequences of nominating Newt Gingrich, declaring in an interview on Wednesday: “Zany is not what we need in a president.”

 The holiday spirit seemed nowhere near the Capitol Hill yesterday evening, with Democrats and Republicans far apart on a deal to fund the government, and extend an expiring payroll tax cut and lapsed unemployment benefits
