MILWAUKIE, Ore. (CBS Seattle/AP) — Police say a 13-year-old boy found what looked like a hand grenade in the basement ceiling rafters of the family’s rental home in Milwaukie.
Austin Reamer, 13, told his father Sunday about the grenade. Christopher Reamer placed it in the front yard and called police.
Police closed parts of two streets and told neighbors to stay inside while Portland’s Explosive Disposal Unit responded.
The bomb squad removed the device, which was described as a modified military training grenade.
Reamer told KGW-TV that Austin “did a great job as far as not messing around with it, letting his friends know, or taking it to school or anything like that. He did the right thing and came and told an adult.”
The case is still being investigated. Possession of a destructive device is a Class C felony.
