Police say a man has a concealed weapons permit for the gun his 3-year-old son used to fatally shoot himself while his family stopped for gas in Tacoma.
It was western Washington’s third recent shooting by a child.
According to the Tacoma News Tribune, The child and his older sister were in a car with their mother and her boyfriend.
Police Officer Naveed Benjamin says the family stopped at a gas station at about 12:30 a.m. Wednesday. The father put his pistol under the seat and got out to pump gas while the mother went inside the convenience store.
The Tacoma News Tribune reports that the The boy got out of his car seat, and found the pistol. The gun fired, striking the boy in the head. Paramedics took the boy to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Benjamin said. The girl, believed to be 4 or 5, was not injured.
Tacoma police detectives responded to the gas station and conducted interviews.
No arrests were made, Benjamin said, but the investigation was on going.
Detectives questioned the parents and say the shooting is a tragic accident.
