Construction Begins on Pier 57 Ferris Wheel
Construction has begun on a 175-foot ferris wheel that the city of Seattle approved in 2011. According to the Seattle Times, the plans call for the wheel to have 41 enclosed, air-conditioned gondolas and to be perpendicular to Alaskan Way, at the waterward end of Pier 57.
The Ferris wheel will stand 175 feet high, according to the Seattle Times, and would be the second one of its size in the US. The first is in Myrtle Beach, SC (pictured). According to USA Today, the Myrtle Beach ferris wheel is 200 feet tall, and is equipped with one million LED lights and 42 air-conditioned gondolas.
Hal Griffith, the site developer, told KING5 the ferris wheel should be operating by June, 2012.
