Recently, Smithsonian Magazine named Gig Harbor, WA, “One of the 20 Best Small Towns in America”. It actually was in the top 5. In celebration of this achievement, we’ve found our favorite places in Gig Harbor.

Smithsonian Magazine calls Gig Harbor, a little like Maine without Yankees. Settled by Croatian immigrants, Gig Harbor is still very much a fishing village with a population just under 8,000.

Year round harbor sightseeing tours of Gig Harbor and Tacoma. Two hour tours include Gig Harbor, Narrows Bridges / Galloping Gertie, Salmon Beach, and Point Defiance. They also offer 1.25 hour evening cruises out of Gig Harbor. During holidays, you can see the Fourth of July air show and fireworks from the water off of Gig Harbor. Plus, nightly Holiday Lights on Gig Harbor tours are available from Thanksgiving through New Years’ Eve.

Voted “Best Family-Friendly Activity” by South Sound Magazine in 2011, the Harbor History Museum tells the history of the Gig Harbor Peninsula with exhibits and hands-on activities. The Museum was founded as the Peninsula Historical Society in 1963 by a group of women dedicated to preserving Gig Harbor’s history. In 1974 the first museum opened, showcasing the photographs and artifacts collected by the society during the previous years. In 2010, the new Harbor History Museum opened to the public in its state-of-the-art facility located on Gig Harbor’s beautiful waterfront.
