TALKEETNA, Alaska (CBS Seattle) — One Alaska town is the cat’s meow.
A part-Manx cat named Stubbs has been the honorary mayor of the small town of Talkeetna for over a decade.
KTUU-TV reports that Stubbs was elected mayor as a write-in candidate nearly 15 years ago because residents weren’t enamored with their choices and told others to vote for the cat.
Stubbs has now become a tourist attraction in the 900-person town.
“[W]e probably have 30 to 40 people a day come in who are tourists wanting to see him,” Lauri Stec, employee at Nagley’s General Store, told KTUU.
The 15-year-old cat is treated like royalty.
“Every day he goes in (Nagley’s) and has catnip in a wine glass,” resident Jerry Roach told KTUU.
Talkeetna is expected to be a tourist destination as long as Stubbs is “mayor.”
“I’m very confident that Talkeena will be A-OK, as long as we have Stubbs around,” resident Skye Farrar told the station.
