Seattle Public Theater Youth Program Performs ‘Sweeney Todd’ August 17 – 25
Produced in conjunction with the Seattle Opera, the artists in the Seattle Public Theater Youth Program have been beating out the complex rhythms and singing the hypnotic strains of Stephen Sondheim’s modern musical classic. The six free performances run August 17, 18, 19, 24 and 25 at the historic Bathhouse Theater on Green Lake.
In Sweeney Todd, a maligned barber returns to the filthy streets of 19th Century London only to find his wife dead and daughter in the hands of the corrupt judge who transported him to prison. As he plots, Todd forms a murderous alliance with Mrs. Lovett and the two launch a bloody spree of murder and meat pies.
Artistic and Education Director Shana Bestock says, “We are very excited to continue our partnership with Seattle Opera. Hearing opera pouring out of the Bathhouse is a thrill. This is our most ambitious adventure yet! Kelly and Barbara are a dream team of artistic elegance and educational excellence – it’s an honor to see them work with this remarkable ensemble of young artists.”
SWEENEY TODD performances are Friday, August 17 at 7:00pm; Saturday, August 18 at 7:00pm; Sunday, August 19 at 2:00pm; Friday, August 24 at 7:00pm; and Saturday, August 25 for two performances at 2:00pm and 7:00pm. Performances are free. Donations to the SPT Youth Program Scholarship fund happily accepted.
