PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Commissioner Randy Leonard has scheduled a Sept. 6 public hearing on the effort to fluoridate the city of Portland’s water supply.

Leonard strongly supports the plan, saying the “long-overdue step” is the most effective and affordable way to give all children a shot at healthy teeth.

Mayor Sam Adams and Commissioner Nick Fish also support the plan, giving the pro-fluoride bloc a majority on the five-member council.

Leonard says Oregon children have twice the rate of untreated tooth decay as those in Washington state, and the difference is that kids in Washington generally drink fluoridated water.

Portland voters have three times rejected fluoridation, most recently in 1980.

Opponents say fluoridation is unsafe and violates an individual’s right to consent to medication.
