SEATTLE (AP) — Some of the most successful charter school organizations in the nation say they would like to open schools in Washington state if voters approve the charter initiative on the November ballot.

Rocketship Education, Green Dot Public Schools and Aspire Public Schools all say they would consider opening schools in Washington. The three California-based groups are among the top charter school organizations, according to their student test scores and graduate rates.

Initiative 1240 would allow the independent public schools to be established in Washington state for the first time. Voters have rejected the idea three other times, in 1996, 2000 and 2004.

But even if voters approve the initiative, the three organizations say it could take years to open their first school in Washington. Home-grown groups are also expected to apply to open schools if the charter initiative passes.
