(CBS Seattle) – August 15th was a perfect day on the mound for Mariners ace Felix Hernadez when he hurled the first perfect game in team history and the 23rd in Major League history. That was one of several stellar performances for the Seattle starter during the month of August, which is why the Venezuela native is being named the American League Pitcher of the Month.
In August, Hernandez was undefeated with a 4-0 record. He tossed three shutouts, compiled a 1.08 ERA, struck out 31 batters and only allowed four walks. Among qualifying starters, the 26-year-old finished first in the A.L. in shutouts, ERA and opponents batting average (.137), was tied for first in wins and was third in innings pitched.
The 26-year-old was also one of only two MLB pitchers to follow a perfect game with a start of at least 7.0 innings, allowing one or fewer runs and earning the win (August 21st against the Cleveland Indians).
In recognition for his American League Pitcher of the Month Award, Felix Hernandez will receive a specially designed trophy, suitably engraved, for his accomplishment.
