AUCKLAND, N.Z. (CBS Seattle) – An unidentified man had to seek emergency medical care to get an eel safely removed from his rectum.

According to the New Zealand Herald, the man arrived at the Accident & Emergency wing of an Auckland hospital last week complaining of a rather peculiar ailment.

“[W]e can confirm that an adult male presented at Auckland City Hospital … with an eel inside him,” Matt Rogers, spokesman for Auckland District Health Board, was quoted as saying. “No further comment will be made out of respect for the patient’s right to privacy.”

However, a second, anonymous hospital representative revealed further details on the incident to the paper.

“The eel was about the size of a decent sprig of asparagus and the incident is the talk of the place,” the source reportedly said. “Doctors and nurses have come across people with strange objects that have got stuck where they shouldn’t be before, but an eel has to be a first.”

How the eel became trapped inside the man is unknown, but doctors were reportedly able to assist him and free the eel.

He was discharged later that day, the paper learned.
