Fuel economy for this 155 horsepower 4-cylinder engine is 26 city and 35 highway or 29 mpg combined. Couple that with an SUV that is really fun to drive with the 6 speed manual or automatic and a total price of about 25 thousand dollars and you have a pretty solid offering from the zoom zoom engineers from Mazda. If you order the CX-5 with the manual, you give up Bluetooth, navigation and larger alloy wheels. They should offer the manual with those extras. It’s a blast to drive.
The interior has a lot of nice squishy plastic and nice cubbyholes for storage. It’s not flashy but it all works well. I did miss Bluetooth on this stripped down version. You do get a USB connector for your MP3 player or mobile phone. The controls are basic and easy to use, a trait lacking in many computers, or cars these days.
The only ergonomic snafu is the start stop button that is hidden behind the wiper controls. It’s a tight fit. But the rest of the interior is solid and spacious with 65 feet of cubic space for you, your dog, family and all of your stuff. For sheer driving fun, this is the best small SUV in its class.
Mazda calls the exterior soul in motion. I like the nice swoopy lines of the CX-5. It’s like a Miata with cargo space.
