Guide to Veteran’s Day Events and Observances in Puget Sound

A parade, making a card, running a 5K… there are many ways we can show our appreciation to our American Veterans. Here are some fun events for active and retired military and their families to celebrate with us on Veteran’s Day.

Make-a-Card for a Veteran

The West Seattle American Legion Auxiliary Unit 160 invites children (and adults) to make a card for a Veteran for Veteran’s Day. Cards can be dropped off at the American Legion Hall (through the mail slot at the front of the building) or if your school is interested in doing it as a school project, the American Legion can arrange to pick them up. Please drop off cards no later than Thursday, November 8. Contact Andrea Geraghty at alaunit160@gmail.com to make arrangements for pick-up from schools by November 1. The Thank you cards will be distributed to Veterans currently living in the West Seattle area and Veterans at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Remembrance Ceremony and Lighting of the Flame

The flame is lit and guarded through the night at the Veterans Memorial. Wreath placement, rifle salute, prayers and taps encompass this ceremony.

The 47th annual Veterans Day Parade

Come see one of the largest Veteran's Day Parades in the US! The parade boasts almost 200 units and over 5,500 parade participants, including over 25 marching bands, military vehicles, veterans' units, honor guards and more. The one-mile parade route travels west along Main Street to A Street NW.

The ceremony will include recognition of Herb Bridge ’47, the first recipient of the new Distinguished Alumni Veteran Award. Musician Third Class Sara Reasner, a musical ambassador for the United States Navy, will join the Husky Marching Band in honoring men and women throughout our region for their dedication and service in the U.S. Armed Forces.

The Museum recognizes the contributions of America’s veterans at the annual Veterans Day Ceremony. The Boeing Employees’ Concert Band performs patriotic music from noon to 1:00pm. The 1:00pm Veterans Day ceremony features guest speakers and a color guard. There will also special programs for youth, adults and families. On Veterans Day all U.S. veterans and current U.S. military personnel will be admitted to the Museum free of charge. An autograph session immediately follows the ceremony.
