Federal Court Names New Monitor for SPD

SEATTLE (AP) — A federal judge has named a prominent Los Angeles police reformer to oversee changes at the Seattle Police Department.

Merrick Bobb is an expert on police accountability who will serve as the independent monitor of a settlement agreement between the city and the Justice Department. The DOJ found that Seattle police engaged in a pattern or practice of using excessive force, and the Seattle Police Department has agreed to revise its use of force policies and enhance its training, reporting and supervision of use-of-force incidents.

Since 1993, Bobb has served as monitor for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, the fourth largest law enforcement agency in the U.S.

He also served as deputy general counsel for the independent commission that investigated the Los Angeles Police Department after the Rodney King beating.
