ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — The Anchorage School District has eliminated 100 non-teacher positions in a move that will save more than $4 million.

Superintendent Jim Browder announced the cuts in a release Wednesday. The cuts are part of the district’s attempt to address a $25 million shortfall projected for the next school year.

Positions lost were teaching assistants, tutors, secretaries and professional staff at the Education Center administration building. The district says a quarter of the layoffs came from the administration building.

Some positions have been vacant since July.

Browder says no teaching positions were cut and no teacher layoffs are anticipated in the coming year. However, he says further reductions are anticipated and the district will look at every support position vacancy.
