Cirque du Soleil returns to Seattle with its latest big top production, Amaluna, premiering January 31, 2013 under the blue-and-yellow Big Top at King County’s Marymoor Park. Directed by Diane Paulus, a renowned theatre director from New York, Amaluna had its world premiere in Montreal in April 2012 and is now touring across Canada. Seattle will be Amaluna’s first stop in the United States and will be the 8th Big Top production to visit Seattle since 1990.

Cirque du Soleil’s all new Amaluna invites the audience to a mysterious island governed by Goddesses and guided by the cycles of the moon.

Their queen, Prospera, directs her daughter’s coming-of-age ceremony in a rite that honours femininity, renewal, rebirth and balance which marks the passing of these insights and values from one generation to the next.

In the wake of a storm caused by Prospera, a group of young men lands on the island, triggering an epic, emotional story of love between Prospera’s daughter and a brave young suitor. But theirs is a love that will be put to the test. The couple must face numerous demanding trials and overcome daunting setbacks before they can achieve mutual trust, faith and harmony.

You’ll meet the Balance Goddess, and the Amazons, a fierce feminine force on the island. They present a fast-paced theatrical version of classic gymnastic routines, something never before performed in a Cirque du Soleil show. The Valkyries fly out high over the audience, rescuing Cali, a half-man, half-lizard character in the story line.

Diane Paulus, Artistic Director of the American Repertory Theater (ART) at Harvard University, is directing Amaluna. This is the first time she has worked with Cirque du Soleil. In 2012, she won the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical with her revival of Broadway’s Porgy and Bess.

Amaluna performances will run from January 31, 2013 through March 17, at King County’s Marymoor Park in Redmond. Tickets are available online HERE. Plus, you can purchase a Special Family 4-Pack for $129.50 for select performances (this value includes 2 adult and 2 child tickets).
