A new tradition at The 5th, the theater again opens its doors to the public at Curtain Up! A Celebration of Musical Theater at The 5th. In conjunction with its glorious new production of Meredith Willson’s The Music Man, The 5th Avenue Theatre is hosting a fantastic, fun-filled weekend celebrating our great indigenous art form, the American Musical. The event takes place February 9-10, 2013, including a free performance of The Music Man. Families and patrons of all ages will be welcomed at The 5th to sing, dance, learn, and most of all, have fun!

The 5th will welcome brand new audience members to a FREE performance of Meredith Willson’s The Music Man at 7:00pm on Sunday, February 10, 2013. A total of 2,100 tickets will be given away to those who come in person to The 5th Avenue Theatre Box Office on Saturday, January 26, beginning at 10:00am (limit 4 tickets per household).

The 5th Avenue Theatre is thrilled to invite Seattle residents to a free weekend of festivities called Curtain Up!, celebrating the great indigenous art form, the American Musical, on Saturday and Sunday, February 9-10, 2013. Come to The 5th and experience the magic of musical theater, perhaps for the first time!

Curtain Up! visitors will have the opportunity to step into the spotlight. Participants of all ages and performers of all skill levels can learn a song from The Music Man or take a spin at a Broadway dance combination in the cast’s rehearsal space! Families can jump into endlessly entertaining crafts and activities throughout the weekend.

Visitors will get the opportunity to see how the creative team for The Music Man brings the show to life with costume sketches and set designs on display. The display will also explore the history of musical theater and its evolution, from The Pirates of Penzance to Next to Normal.

Additionally, participants will have the chance to tour The 5th Avenue Theatre. Built in 1926 with a design inspired by royal sites in China, the theater is a stunning piece of Seattle history. Tours will take place on both Saturday and Sunday mornings, beginning in the theater lobby at 10:00am.

Attendees will have the chance to hear from community experts, as well as students from The 5th Avenue’s Rising Star Project: The Music Man. Throughout the weekend, Curtain Up! guests can immerse themselves in the world of the musical through informative Show Talks with Albert Evans, The 5th’s resident expert on all things musical, as well as special guests. The talks will focus on the American musical and its impact on our culture, with topics including “American Choreographers,” “Composer and Lyricists of Musical Theater,” and “Women in Musical Theater.” Visitors can also watch a panel discussion with musical theater luminaries, hosted by David Armstrong, as they discuss our great American art form.

The 5th Avenue Theatre’s Adventure Musical Theatre Touring Company will be visiting over 90 elementary and middle schools this coming spring with their production of It Happened at the World’s Fair. This original (and educational) musical adventure follows two 6th graders, whose field trip to the Seattle Center takes a mysterious and exciting turn when they step off the elevator and find the Space Needle is orange, Elvis is The King, and the year is 1962! Curtain Up! visitors will be among the first to see the acclaimed production before it goes on tour exclusively in schools.
