(1090 The Fan) – Jesus Montero has another veteran to spell him behind the plate.
Greg Johns of MLB.com reports free agent Kelly Shoppach is a physical away from finalizing a deal with the Mariners. Multiple sources report gives Shoppach a one-year deal worth $1.5 million plus $500 thousand in incentives.
The move is intended to add depth to the catcher spot after the Mariners dealt John Jaso to the Oakland A’s in order to obtain Mike Morse from the Washington Nationals. The Mariners also signed veteran catcher Ronny Paulino last week as well.
Shoppach, who turns 33 in April, appeared in 76 games last season for the New York Mets and Boston Red Sox, hitting .233. The Texas-native has a liftime fielding percentage of .990.
