(1090 The Fan) – On Friday, there’s some friendly fire happening at Peoria Stadium in Arizona as the Mariners begin their 37th spring training with the Cactus League opener against the San Diego Padres.

Friday’s 3:05 pm game is a charity match. Proceeds from the game go towards the Peoria Diamond Club; An organization that funds special needs kids and educational, leadership and youth athletic programs.

But don’t let that word “charity” fool you. For the fourth year in a row, the statistics from Friday’s game will count towards the official Cactus League standings.

Some of the Mariners pitchers who’ll get some work on the mound Friday include Hector Noesi, Oliver Perez, D.J. Mitchell and Chance Ruffin. The Padres will send Sean O’Sullivan, Adys Portillo and a few others to the hill.

Noesi, 26, who came from the Yankees in the Michael Pineda-Jesus Montero swap, had a rough 2012 campaign posting a 5.82 ERA. Noesi’s 2-12 record was a result of ending the season with  nine consecutive losses. The righty out of the Domican Republic is looking to improve his control and becoming the number five starter. He’s shown signs of brilliance before, however. On April 14 he tossed eight shutout innings, becoming the second Mariners pitcher to throw at least eight innings and not allow a run in his first Safeco Field start. Felix Hernandez is the other guy.

The M’s will see action against the Friars’ number one prospect, Casey Kelly, on Sunday.
