REPORT: Seattle Police Chief John Diaz Stepping Down
(CBS Seattle) – After a relatively short tenure, Seattle Police Chief John Diaz is retiring, according to KIROTV.com.
According to KIROTV.com, Assistant Chief Jim Pugel will serve as interim chief. City officials have indicated a formal announcement will be presented Monday at 11:30 am.
Diaz served as an interim police chief four years ago before being officially appointed a year later. He has been with the Seattle Police Department for more than 30 years.
Under Diaz’s belt, the department was rocked by several, controversial incidents including a deadly, officer-involved shooting which resulted in the death of a First Nation woodcarver who had been holding a carving knife. Claims of racial bias led to a Department of Justice Investigation as well.
