Police ID Woman Accused Of Hitting Child At Zoo

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A Portland police spokesman says numerous tips have helped investigators identify a woman who was reported kicking, slapping and pushing a little girl at the Oregon Zoo.

Sgt. Pete Simpson says the woman lives in Canby and is the child’s mother. He says the Oregon Department of Human Services is now handling the case. Canby police and Clackamas County Child Protective Services also worked with Portland police.

Police say a zoo patron reported seeing a woman in her 20s kick a young girl, knocking her to the ground on Tuesday. The crying child walked to a bench. The witness told police the woman then hit the girl on the side of the head, knocking her to the ground again. The child appeared to be about 3 years old.

The witness says she confronted the young woman, who swore at her, then headed for the exit. Zoo surveillance video showed the woman and girl leaving with another woman and another young child.
