Marine Discharged After DNA Results Confirm Rape

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — An Alaska-based Marine has been dishonorably discharged after police say DNA testing confirmed he sexually assaulted a woman at a party.

Anchorage police say in a release that 33-year-old Gunnery Sgt. Nicholas Howard was found guilty of assault and adultery on Friday. He was discharged and stripped of rank at the court-martial sentencing in San Diego.

Howard and four others, including his friend and that man’s girlfriend, attended a party Dec. 31, 2011. Howard denied the woman’s claim she was assaulted when the two were left alone.

Anchorage police turned the case over to the Marine Corps, which expedited DNA testing at the Army crime lab. Police say DNA results confirmed sexual contact.

Anchorage authorities are considering other charges against the former Marine recruiter.
