(1090 The Fan) – The catching situation in Seattle continues to be tumultuous to say the least.
On Friday, the Mariners signed catcher Henry Blanco and simultaneously designated catcher Kelly Shoppach for assignment, according to the team.
The 41-year-old veteran Blanco was released by the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday.
In 16 Major League seasons, Blanco has been regarded as one of the better defensive catchers in baseball, but is not an offensive threat. The Venezuela native has never tallied at least 70 hits in a season (career high is 67) nor reached 50 RBIs (career high is 37).
Meanwhile, Shoppach’s line for 2013 is .196/.293/.346. The Mariners have ten days to trade, release or outright his contract.
