OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) — The Senate has approved a measure that makes a variety of changes in the state’s education system, including an enhanced focus on young students who are reading below grade level and development of rules on how to handle student discipline.

The measure passed on a 26-22 vote late Thursday night and now heads to the House for consideration.

The measure sets up a four-tier system for students based on their reading level and creates a process to improve the student’s reading skills and develop a plan for advancement. The bill also expands a learning assistance program in an effort to reduce disruptive behavior in classrooms. It also has the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction convene a task force to develop standards for actions taken by school districts to deal with student discipline.
