(1090 The Fan) — The phrase “a healthy Franklin Gutierrez” is often thrown around in conversations around town regarding what the Mariners could be if they were to have such an element. After yesterday’s news of Gutierrez’s return to the disabled list, we’re not sure there will ever be a “healthy” Gutierrez in a Seattle uniform.
The move forced the team to recall Dustin Ackley — who had been trying to fix his swing and learn to play in the outfield in Tacoma.
Should Ackley get the hang of the outfield and start to turn things around offensively, the Mariners will have virtually no reason to hold on to Gutierrez. J.J. Matthews of the Bleacher Report says, “it would not be a shock to see the Mariners look to give other players a chance in the outfield moving forward, especially with Guti’s contract set to expire at the end of this season.”
