B.C. Grandma Completes Round-The-World Solo Trip In Sailboat

(CBS Seattle) — A 70-year-old retired schoolteacher from England has completed a round-the-world solo trip in a sailboat — starting and ending in Victoria, B.C.

Jeanne Socrates, started her journey from Inner Harbour last October and made her return Monday, according to the Peninsula Daily News.

After completing the trip in her 36-foot, 2-inch cruiser Nereida, Socrates becomes the oldest woman sailor to make a solo, non-stop circumnavigation of the globe, Canadian Press reports.

According to the Peninsula Daily News, the grandmother made the trip to raise money for Marie Curie Cancer Care, a British program that provides free home nursing for terminally ill cancer patients.
