School Bus Fatally Injures Woman In Portland

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Portland police have identified a woman fatally injured when she was hit by a school bus as she crossed a street with her husband Tuesday afternoon.

Sgt. Pete Simpson identified her as 41-year-old Renee Jean Bates. Her husband, 41-year-old Shawn Dale Bates, was also hit by the bus but did not require any medical attention. Simpson says they lived in the southeast Portland neighborhood where the collision took place.

Police say the bus driver, 55-year-old Billie Jean Neel of Gladstone, has fully cooperated with investigators. Simpson says Neel was not impaired.

The crash remains under investigation.

The accident happened at an intersection. The bus was from the West Linn School District and was carrying two children, who were not injured.
