SEATTLE –Tina Thompson has been selected as the WNBA Western Conference Player of the Week for games played July 22 through July 29. This is Thompson’s first honor of this season and the seventh of her career.

“Tina is very deserving of being player of the week, and could have been before this season,” said Storm head coach and general manager Brian Agler. “Her play has definitely helped keep us in playoff contention. We anticipate her play to stay at this a high level as well because she is hungry.”

Thompson earned the award following her 23-point game to lead the Storm to a win against the Sparks on July 25, snapping an eight-game skid against Los Angeles and logging their first win over the Sparks since August 28, 2011. Thompson scored 11 points in the first quarter, shooting 4-5, bringing Seattle to an early 12-point lead. This is Thompson’s third 20-plus point game this season. She also chipped in eight rebounds, two assists, and shot 100% from the line.

Following the win, Thompson said, “It’s important. Just in the big scheme of things. It’s not going to matter that I won this game once it’s all over, just personally, but in the aspect of our team it’s really important because we felt like we let one kind of get away on Saturday at home and we don’t like losing games at home, so coming here and getting this game here in L.A. was important for us mentally going into the All-Star break. I feel like we’re kind of figuring out who we are and how we want to play consistently and it’s good to kind of have this feeling. Everyone will be able to get rest and recover. It’s always nicer to have that off of a win.”

In her 17th season of play, WNBA all-time career scoring leader Thompson is averaging 12.3 points per game and five rebounds per game. Thompson ranks second among Storm players in scoring and rebounds.

The Storm returns to the court on Aug. 1 to host the Phoenix Mercury. The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. tipoff at KeyArena.
