(CBS Seattle) — A therapist at the Airway Heights Corrections Center outside Spokane resigned after having a sexual relationship with a sex offender at the facility, according to the Spokesman-Review.

Sarah Brooks was charged with two counts of first-degree custodial misconduct, a felony. She pleaded guilty to lesser charges of second-degree custodial misconduct, a misdemeanor. Prosecutors said Brooks was having a sexual relationship with a male sex offender. He declined to press charges, so she was offered the plea deal.

A corrections spokesperson says employees are not allowed to have relationships with offenders and it’s a policy they take very seriously.

Brooks specialized in sexual deviancy treatment and was working in the Sex Offender Treatment Program. She resigned in April when staff found out about the affair. Brooks was facing more than four years in prison, but with the plea deal, she will serve 24 months probation and must undergo alcohol treatment and mental health counseling.
