Seattle Named Fifth Preppiest City
(CBS Seattle) — Here is a list you may not have expected Seattle to be part of: “Most Preppy Cities In America.”
Despite the city’s reputation as the unofficial hometown of flannel shirts and the birthplace of the ‘socks with sandals’ look, Seattle fits right in with the popped collar crowd, taking the number five spot in this ranking.
The folks over at the Movoto Blog looked at criteria like country clubs per capita, percentage of boarding schools and number of preppy clothing retailers, among others. Seattle earned big points for the number of college graduates. More than 55 percent of Seattle residents hold at least a bachelor’s degree. There are also a fair number of yacht clubs in the Emerald City, which boosted Seattle a little higher, too. Apparently all those flannel shirts are from L.L. Bean.
The list held a few other surprises including Portland (No. 9) and Plano, Texas (No. 8). But, a few of the cities, like San Francisco (No. 1) and Boston (No. 6), seemed to fit in like a Lacoste logo at a country club.
