(CBS Seattle) — A Graham woman is taking credit for putting her ex-husband behind bars with a little help from Facebook.
Vera Merrill told KIRO TV she argued with her ex-husband Brad Helvy just hours before her SUV exploded outside her home and she immediately suspected him of the crime. She didn’t have any solid evidence, so Merrill said she created a fake Facebook page using the name Beverly Mason, then became friends with Helvy.
Soon Helvy admitted to Beverly on Facebook that he “made thermite” and put it in his ex-wife’s car, Merrill told KIRO.
Pierce County Detective Ed Troyer said the Facebook admission along with cell phone records placing Helvy at Merrill’s home the night of the fire were enough for an arrest.
Helvy is now in jail, charged with arson.
