(1090 The Fan) — Hisashi Iwakuma takes the mound for Game 3 of the Mariners’ current four-game series in Detroit.
So far during this Motor City trip, the Mariners have been outscored 10-4. Tuesday’s game featured another bullpen collapse: Yoervis Medina was pegged for a run before Charlie Furbush surrendered two earned runs in just a third of an inning.
If anyone is going to help the Mariners get out of this funk, it will be Iwakuma — he hasn’t allowed more than three runs over his six-start unbeaten stretch and last pitched in Friday’s 2-1 loss to St. Louis. The righty logged seven scoreless innings of three-hit ball.
Unfortunately for the Seattle offense, the Tigers will send Justin Verlander to the mound. The former AL MVP is slowly getting back to his dominant form after a few rough spots during the 2013 campaign. Verlander has moved to 13-11 with a 3.66 ERA in 31 starts.
The Tigers took two of three from the Mariners in Seattle back in April, but were swept in three games in the lone meeting between the clubs last year in Detroit.
