Washington Man Gets 27 Years For 2nd Fatal Wreck

TACOMA, Wash. (AP) — A 51-year-old Washington man has been sentenced to 27 years in prison for vehicular homicide in the August 2012 death of a man who was walking along a road in the community of Bonney Lake.

This was the second vehicular homicide conviction for James Southard, Jr. He was sentenced to 10 years in the earlier case.

Pierce County Prosecutor Mark Lindquist said Friday that Southard struck and killed Gary Slick in the most recent case.

The prosecutor’s office says officers found methamphetamine and more than 170 prescription drug pills in Southard’s truck.

In 1999, Southard caused a multiple car accident that resulted in the death of Shawn Fairbanks. Southard was intoxicated at the time and was convicted of vehicular homicide.
