Amazon Lures Bookstores To Sell Kindles

SEATTLE (AP) — Amazon is offering an enticement to independent bookstores: sell the Kindle and get a 10 percent cut of the price of the digital books that people buy for it, for two years. Inc. said Wednesday that the program, called “Amazon Source,” will also give booksellers a discount when they purchase Kindles for resale. Retailers that don’t classify themselves as booksellers get a larger discount on the Kindles but not the 10 percent cut of the books sold on the devices.

Booksellers get a 6 percent off Kindle devices for resale, while general retailers get 9 percent off.

Amazon got its start selling books over the Internet and is now the world’s largest online retailer. It competes with brick-and-mortar bookstores by selling books at a discount.
