(1090 The Fan) — The Seattle Thunderbirds general manager Russ Farwell announced Friday that five Thunderbirds players — three current players and two prospects — have been named to the rosters for the 2014 Under-17 Hockey Challenge.
Forwards Mathew Barzal and Keegan Kolesar join defenseman Ethan Bear, all currently on the T-Birds roster, as selections for the week-long tournament held in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia from December 29-January 4th, 2014. The other two players selected by the Hockey Manitoba and Saskatchewan Hockey Association are center Lane Pederson and goalie Logan Flodell.
Barzal, 16, has played the most of the three current T-Birds selected for the Challenge. Since mid-October, Barzal has largely been playing on the second line for Seattle and has been tremendous with three goals and 19 assists in 22 games, through Friday. Barzal will play for Team Pacific while the other four will join Team West.
Kolesar, 16, has played in all 22 games this season for Seattle, posting a goal and three assists. He also has eight penalty minutes thus far.
Bear, also 16, has provided four points including a goal in 18 games thus far, while spending just two minutes in the penalty box.
The goalie Flodell has posted a 2.28 goals against average and a .922 save percentage for a 5-2-2 record in nine games for the Regina Pat Canadians of the Saskatchewan Midget AAA hockey league. Pederson, meanwhile, has seven goals and eight assists in 15 games with the Saskatoon Blazers also of the Saskatchewan Midget AAA league.
The four Seattle players will join a 22-player roster for the West made up of players born in the year 1997 or sooner. The 2014 U-17 Hockey Challenge will bring together 10 teams filled the youngest and brightest hockey players from around the world.
Team West and Team Pacific will compete in Group A of the Challenge against Team Quebec, Sweden and the Czech Republic. Group B consists of Germany, USA, Team Ontario, Team Atlantic and Russia.
