PORTLAND (CBS Seattle) – An Oregon teacher says he was fired because of his opposition to abortion.

Bill Diss tells KATU-TV his termination stems from his public opposition to a new Planned Parenthood office in Portland back in 2007.

The math teacher says his reviews before then were stellar, but that everything changed after he attended a protest.

“The review I got in 2010, in every single area, were very negative comments,” says Diss. “I was marked down in a whole bunch of areas. I was even marked down for how my classroom looked.”

He believes school leaders deliberately targeted him because of his religious beliefs and not his ability as a teacher. The Portland Public School District has issued a statement: “Mr. Diss has said his termination was based on his religious beliefs and his right to free speech. That is not the case. The school district takes discipline of all employees seriously. Mr. Diss’s conduct and performance led to his removal from the classroom and termination.”

Diss confirms there were allegations he intimidated and harassed students and other faculty members but he says that is not true.

He is appealing the dismissal and is considering legal action against the school district.
