(1090 The Fan) — Que Johnson scored 19 points as Washington State put last week’s loss to UTEP behind them with an 85-48 win over Mississippi Valley State, Saturday at the Beasley Coliseum.
Royce Woolridge scored 16 points and D.J. Shelton added 14 points and 13 rebounds for the Cougars who pulled away from the Delta Devils with a 53-point second half.
Washington State built a 21-3 lead midway through the first half and never looked back. Johnson had two of his five 3-point baskets to propel the run. The Delta Devils managed to close the gap to 10 at the half, 32-22.
The game stayed respectable until about the 12-minute mark of the second half, when Washington State (7-5) blew it open with a 30-8 run that put them ahead 81-45.
Mississippi Valley State (3-8) out of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC), has never beaten the Cougars in the two teams’ history, falling each of the previous three meetings.
In fact, the Cougars entered Saturday’s game against the Delta Devils 17-0 all-time versus the SWAC.
Jeffrey Simmons led Mississippi Valley State with nine points off the bench.
The Cougars now gear to face the No. 1-ranked Arizona Wildcats in Tucson on Thursday as they kick of Pac-12 conference play.
