Gonzaga Holds Off Santa Clara In Conference Opener
(1090 The Fan) — David Stockton had 21 points and four steals to lead Gonzaga to a 74-60 win over Santa Clara, Saturday night.
No. 24 Gonzaga (11-2) opened conference play against its West Coast Conference rival which looked to be rebounding after a poor start to the season, having won four of its last five games.
The Broncos held a 26-22 lead late in the first half, but Gonzaga closed on a 9-4 run behind some key baskets by junior guard Kevin Pangos to take a 31-26 lead at the half. Pangos finished with 17 points on 5-for-8 shooting.
In the second half, Santa Clara kept it close until under the 8-minute mark when the Bulldogs went on another key run to take a double-digit lead.
With 7:58 to play and Gonzaga ahead 53-50, the Bulldogs came out of the timeout and scored 10 unanswered to close out the game. Pangos and guard Drew Barham each made a 3-point basket to spur the rally.
Brandon Clark scored 22 points to lead the Broncos who shot 47 percent from the field for the game, but were outshot 31-12 from the free-throw line.
The Bulldogs continue their homestand Monday, with a matchup versus San Francisco.
