SEATTLE (AP) — Seattle’s new mayor Ed Murray has announced plans to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour for all city employees.

Murray spokesman Jeffrey Reading says the mayor plans to sign the executive order later Friday.

A preliminary budget analysis shows the move would cost Seattle an additional $690,000 in payroll and benefit costs. Reading says the costs could rise, depending on factors such as union provisions.

About 600 city workers now earn less than $15 an hour, including ushers, cashiers and attendants. There are about 10,000 city employees.

Murray, who took office on Jan. 1, has said he would give a task force four months to come up with a plan to raise the city’s minimum wage in the private sector.
