(1090 The Fan) — The Seattle Thunderbirds acquired center Russell Maxwell from the Lethbridge Hurricanes in exchange for forwards Seth Swenson and Michal Holub, the team announced, Wednesday.
Lethbridge will also receive a fourth round 2014 Bantam draft selection.
Maxwell, 19, scored 10 goals and dished out 17 assists in 42 games for the Hurricanes this season. The center had 22 goals and 33 assists over 66 games last season with Lethbridge.
“We are excited to add Maxwell to our team,” Seattle general manager Russ Farwell said in a statement, Wednesday. “He is a competitive, quality center that will help us in both ends of the rink.
“We really wanted to add to our team at center ice and this is a great addition heading into the playoffs.”
Maxwell is an experienced player that represents a clear upgrade over Swenson who had been watching his minutes dwindle over the last couple of months. Swenson, 20, had eight goals and 12 assists in 43 games for Seattle this season.
The second right-winger the Hurricanes picked up is Holub, 17, who has just eight points over two seasons with the T-Birds.
This is the third trade the two teams have consummated this season and seventh overall for Lethbridge (9-30-2-3), which is in clear rebuild mode. Seattle previously acquired Sam McKechnie, Jaimen Yakubowski and Adam Henry from the Hurricanes back in October.
Like the other three, Maxwell apparently made it known to Lethbridge general manager Brad Robson that he wanted to play for a contender.
“He wanted the opportunity to play in the playoffs, so this was an opportunity to fulfill his requests and dreams given the personal commitments he has for next year.”
It is unclear when Maxwell will see his first action for Seattle, but with the T-Birds playing Saturday and still without forwards Mathew Barzal, Connor Honey and potentially Jakubowski as well, his addition could be very beneficial.
