HILLSBORO, Ore. (AP) — A woman crossing the road in front of her home to go to her mailbox was struck and killed Monday evening in rural Washington County.
The sheriff’s office says the driver of a pickup truck didn’t see her until the last second. He swerved but was unable to avoid her.
The sheriff’s office says 62-year-old Joan Carol Deyoung-Burklund died at the scene.
The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with deputies. The driver of a car behind the pickup said he was driving normally, at or below the 55 mph speed limit. Deputies say he was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol and was not arrested or cited.
