SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a substitute teacher who was removed from an elementary school classroom for unusual behavior on Thursday afternoon.
The sheriff’s office arrested 46-year-old Matthew Deryan on suspicions of assault and unlawful imprisonment at Trent Elementary School.
The sheriff’s office said Friday that at least three sixth-grade students told the principal that Deryan had verbally and physically abused them. The principal also told investigators there were allegations Deryan smelled of alcohol while on school property.
Deryan was taken into custody at his home without incident Thursday evening.
