(CBS Seattle) — The historic Pioneer Square Pergola damaged the night of the Super Bowl by exuberant Seahawks fans will be repaired thanks to a successful campaign to raise funds for the restoration project.
The Seattle Parks Department had initially estimated $25,000 worth of damage was caused to the century-old landmark. On Tuesday, donations totaling $26,000 from Western Washington Honda Dealers and an online fundraiser via gofundme.com labeled “#HowSeattleRiots” were presented to the department.
The online campaign, which was initiated shortly after the damage was reported on Super Bowl Sunday, gathered 570 donations total from people all over the country.
Michael Shiosaki with the Seattle Parks Department says extra money from the donations not needed for the repairs will go into the Pioneer Square park budget.
Officials believe the repairs will be completed before next month.
